types of testing

We offer two types of allergy testing:

1. The "gold standard" intradermal skin test (IDST)

2. Blood (serum) allergy testing

During the skin test, approximately 65 allergens are injected intradermally (into the skin). Test results are known within a few minutes. Most patients are lightly sedated (not anesthetized) for this procedure to minimize discomfort.

PREPARATION FOR THE PROCEDURE (IDST)

A consultation is needed prior to any procedure

Certain medications may interfere with the results of the skin test and should be withdrawn prior to the test date, not the consultation date

  • Steroids (oral, otic, ophthalmic, topical) - withdrawal 3-4 weeks

  • Steroids (injectable)   -   withdrawal 8-12 weeks

  • Antihistamines   -   withdrawal 1-2 weeks
